Who is Rick Kunelius?
I have been a part time Marriage Commissioner since the fall of 1994 and I am still loving the appointment. I am addicted to the outdoors, so “outdoor” weddings are my specialty. I am willing to go almost anywhere within the Banff region to perform an outdoor wedding ceremony. I am the only marriage commissioner certified by the Province of Alberta to guide and perform helicopter weddings from Alpine Helicopters Canmore base.
Prior to becoming a celebrant, I worked with the National Parks Service for 22 years. My responsibilities included mountain rescue, avalanche control, law enforcement, backcountry patrol and wildlife management.
My mountain skills may not be required in the average wedding ceremony, but if someone wishes to be married off the beaten path, my 50 years of outdoor experience may come in handy.
Over the years I have done wildlife consulting for ski areas and helicopter ski operators, served on the Banff Municipal Planning Commission and the Development Appeal Board, guided hikers and X-C skiers, and have hiked, skied and ridden on horseback throughout the Banff region. Memberships have included the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides (ACMG), the World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA), the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and the Royal Geographical Society (RGS).
In 2016 I qualified as a 200-hour Registered Yoga Teacher to help limber up my buddies who could no longer touch their toes and were slowing down.
I do not book weddings more than six months in advance simply because I love to travel, and do not want to have commitments too far in advance.
